Overall I think ScratchJr is a great app for KS1 and it is free! ScratchJr is child friendly, well presented and it can be used to teach key elements of the Computing curriculum. The children all enjoyed using this app and we will be returning again to this app later in the year so that the children can create more complex projects. This gave the children the opportunity to apply their learning and push themselves in the complexity of the programming. The collage consisted of a range of characters moving in different ways. The final project of the term was to make a spy collage using their skills they’d learnt. This is a great function as it allows projects to be based more on the topic being learnt in school. One skill they learnt was how to take photos and use these as their own characters. They learn how to move the cat forward and backward. It shows them how to create and save a new project. The first few lessons were very much based on learning the skills to move characters, add characters and change backgrounds. This is a short tutorial to help children get started with the ScratchJr app. We will be introducing this app into Year One later on in the year. ![]() This was their first experience of this app as ScratchJr. ![]() So far in school we have used this with Year Two to create a basic project based on their topic of spies. The plans are written for American schools but they are transferable and obviously teachers need to adapt the planning to fit their class’ needs. The first few lessons are about the skills then it goes on to explain how the skills go together to make more complex projects. Luckily the creators have also created a teaching program which goes alongside the app. There are some functions where children will need more direction such as linking character’s programs together by using the messaging function. The main interface is very child friendly and allows children to explore the range of basic movement functions which they connect like jigsaw pieces so it’s quite intuitive. Once children have mastered the basics they can then use their skills to create a presentation, story or game using a range of settings or characters.īefore children can make a project they need to learn what the majority of the functions do as there is a good range of functions, some of which children of this age may not have come across in other coding apps. ScratchJr is a coding program which allows children to create a range of projects using programming skills. It is a more basic version on the full version of Scratch and it is currently just on iPad, Android and it is also now web based. ScratchJr is a programming app aimed at the KS1 level but it could be used in lower KS2. ![]()
