I realised it is a SCAM COMPANY after doing more research, read more reviews and found hundreds of comments on its Facebook with the same situation as mine. Worried up and down, I then sent them many messages-emails. I knew it was high season so I was very careful to prepare it way ahead. I’m upset and hating myself for trusting those 5 stars reviews too easily!! I placed my order ($200AUD worth) before Christmas last year, hoping it would arrived before Xmas. Examining Night of The Living Dead (1968), Dillard pointed to the initial fear of zombies giving way to fears of the ‘ordinary failings’ of the human survivors (1987: 22). Zombie texts have for decades been read as a vehicle for challenging and engaging with political and social ideology. As creator Karl Schaefer notes, Black Summer is intended to be ‘an 8-hour chunk you can fight your way through’ ( Cinemablend 2018), accordingly, this article will close with a look at the overarching commentary the show makes when viewed as a cohesive whole. With so much to explore in Black Summer and the recent history of the US, I will approach this analysis systematically, and take each episode and its social commentary one by one. I will contend the show is both a refugee story and a narrative in which infected zombies stand as a stark allegory for the festering sickness of right-wing extremism spreading throughout the United States. I will unpack how America perceives a hierarchy of worth in its immigrant population, exploring how Black Summer depicts the thriving underground economy and examine how Black Summer tackles violence in America’s schools and colleges. This article will approach Black Summer through textual analysis, aligning its aesthetics and narrative beats with political events from the US, and the news coverage of them, to explore the picture of contemporary America that Black Summer presents to us. These cards, while clearly segmenting the narrative, also serve as a guide, a safety rail, as Black Summer reveals both its narrative and its politics at high speed.īlack Summer‘s eight episodes stack up their character deaths as quickly as they stack up their commentary. The cards punctuate and segment the action in lieu of commercial breaks and weekly gaps between episodes on traditional television. The narrative and character beats are clearly marked by black title cards, consisting of one or two words: ‘Rose ’ ‘Spears ’ ‘Bicycle ’ ‘Roll Call ’ ‘Two Bullets’. The series is fast, frenetic, packed with hard punches, and sprints along through both its story and its pointed and poignant social commentary. From the producers’ point of view, the conditions at Netflix encourage a lack of episodic thinking and allow the narrative of Black Summer to unfold in its own unique way. Black Summer also differs in its structure, pacing, and episode length, with the first episode clocking forty-five minutes and the finale coming it at only twenty minutes. A Netflix Original created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, it is a spin-off (rather than a prequel) to Z Nation (SyFy, 2014–2018),īlack Summer differs in tone to Z Nation, offering a more serious view of the apocalypse, rather than the tongue-in-cheek approach preferred by its bigger brother. It argues, then, that while Black Summer might seem to be little more than a graphically violent, guns ‘n’ guts zombie series concerned with wanton action and a high body count, it in fact makes its plentiful and pointed social and political comments as quickly as its zombies are able to reanimate.īlack Summer aired as a full season release on Netflix in April 2019. I begin by discussing how Black Summer confronts the so-called ‘Family Separation’ policy, whereby the children of ‘illegal’ immigrants are separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border, and then explores the show’s multifaceted indictment of Trump’s America. With Trump’s rise to power ushering in a new age of right-wing radicalism, I present Black Summer as a socio-political commentary on the on-going issues regarding attitudes to immigration, race, and violence in America. This article explores the deep concern expressed by Black Summer (Netflix, 2019) regarding several alarming facets of the Donald Trump era. America is teetering on a knife-edge of fascism, fueled by insidious social conservatism and questionable morality that has been festering for decades in the politics and culture of the United States. “I think that events like this can be part of a vehicle for change. “My parents were very intentional about teaching me the history of the game and about pioneers like Bill Powell and Renee Powell and what they did to advance the game, not just for minority golfers but for everyone,” Stackhouse said. But she has known about Clearview and the Powells for much longer. Stackhouse has long been a brand ambassador for KPMG. “Along with Mariah Stackhouse and the LPGA, we came together and, hopefully, will be a catalyst for change that is needed to not only preserve this historical landmark but to ensure that there is more awareness around the need to cultivate diversity in the game of golf and overall.” “When we first heard about the Clearview Legacy Foundation and the need that was there, we were so inspired to get involved,” said Sean Quill, the national sports leader for KPMG US. And in 2023, it will be held in northern New Jersey after the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is played at Baltusrol. In 2022, the Clearview fundraiser will take place in suburban Washington DC after the conclusion of the championship at Congressional Country Club. KPMG, the title sponsor of the Women’s PGA Championship, already has agreed to sponsor events the Monday after each championship in the foreseeable future. The cause exceeds one pro-am in one city. And we continue that message at Clearview today.” My father thought there was a life lesson there. If you hit it good you play well and if you don’t, well, you have to live with the consequences. “The next 75 years, the message of Clearview is to continue to bring people together through golf,” Renee Powell said that Monday in Atlanta. More than selling green fees and golf balls, the mission of The Clearview Legacy Foundation is to educate youth on the values of colorblind inclusion, and the integrity that the game teaches. Undeterred, the veteran built what is now a historical landmark and one of the few courses in America that operates as a 501(c3) non-profit. At that time, he could not join the PGA of America because of the “Caucasian Only” clause the association had in its bylaws until 1963. “My father wanted everyone to be treated equally in the game.”īill Powell’s vision of an open-to-all golf course was revolutionary 75 years ago. So, he built his own course where everyone was welcome regardless of race or gender, where you were from or what you did. But to his surprise he realized that not too much had changed at home and he wasn’t welcome at golf clubs in Ohio. Every town had a golf course and he felt very welcome. He had just come back from Great Britain after the war. “My dad (Bill Powell) built the first nine holes at Clearview, literally, by hand with a shovel and a seed bag around his neck. “I turned pro on June 28th of 1967, so this date is the 54th anniversary of me turning pro and this year is the 75th anniversary of my father building Clearview Golf Club so this is a special time,” Powell said. But each of those pros, along with the more than 100 school-aged children and another hundred participants and sponsors, were captivated by the words and presence of Clearview’s matriarch, Renee Powell. If this had been a normal pro-am, they would have received all the attention. The tour pros - Mariah Stackhouse, Mo Martin, Tiffany Joh, Jane Park, Maria Fassi, Leona Maguire, Brianna Do, Lauren Kim, Emma Talley and Caroline Inglis – were the stars. On June 28th, the Monday after the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, nine LPGA Tour pros participated in a clinic and pro-am at the Bobby Jones Golf Course, just a couple of miles from the urban towers of the Southeast’s largest city. And in June, the course and its mission brought out some of the best female players in the game to raise awareness and funds. But it is exactly how Clearview Golf Club and the Clearview Legacy Foundation outside Canton, Ohio, operate. That is something you don’t see every day. But what happens when the course itself is a charity, when the golf operation – from the clubhouse, to the maintenance, to the carts, programming and all things in between – functions as a tax-deductible charity, part of a cause much greater than the rounds and revenue it runs through? It’s also not unusual for golf operators to partner with charities in long-term fundraising agreements for two or three events a year into perpetuity. Everyone does it, from the most exclusive private clubs in the world to the most open and inexpensive municipal courses in the country. Verdict: I plan on using Pocket Casts for all of my non-exclusive podcast listening from now on and I suspect more and more of you will be doing the same.Android thinks that Pocket Casts is gobbling up internal storage for podcasts, even though I've asked it to use the SD card and even though it actually seems to be storing them there. The layouts are more well defined and there are thoughtful little touches everywhere that make it visually more appealing with clean lines and better use of space. In terms of functionality they’re relatively the same with some small but crucial differences such as the skip back button of Pocket Casts helpfully going back ten seconds and the skip forward button going forward 45 seconds instead of 30 and 30 for both on Overcast. As a longtime Overcast user, I would have to agree. Owen says that Overcast is the only podcast app that can compete with them in terms of functionality but is certain that they deliver a better user experience overall. “We felt it was important to change the business model to align ourselves with the open-access philosophy of our public media partners to reach the largest possible group of podcast enthusiasts,” he says. Obviously, this switch to free will help them compete in the space more broadly, but Owen tells me it wasn’t just about competing for raw numbers. Their user base is passionate, but because of the price barrier that competitors like Stitcher, Overcast, or Spotify didn’t have, Pocket Cast lagged well behind them in total users. A nice graphical interface showing you the podcasts you’ve subscribed to, and easy to make and use filters will tend to do that to heavy podcast users. Tabs at the bottom say “podcasts”, “filters”, “discover”, and “profile”, along with a range of options once you’re inside each tab.ĬEO Owen Grover told me Pocket Casts appeals to very engaged, extremely dedicated fanatical users with incredible engagement of anywhere from 12 to 14 hours of listening per week, per user. These public media giants acquired Pocket Casts to reflect their shared vision: to reach a new generation of listeners while providing the best experience for audio storytellers to connect with their audience. In May of 2018, Pocket Casts was purchased by NPR, WNYC Studios, WBEZ Chicago and This American Life, who collectively account for nearly 200M podcast downloads per month. Pocket Casts Screenshot Podcast Media 2019 It’s only a matter of time before one of the big players wants a piece of the functional beverage pie.Nootropics are colloquially called "smart drugs" or "cognitive enhancers" due to the fact that they might theoretically boost brain function - especially regarding energy, focus, and memory. It will be interesting to see where this burgeoning category goes from here. By creating intentional associations through symbols – in other words – generating visual metaphorical shortcuts in consumer’s minds, brands create stronger connections. The quickest and easiest way to do that? Instill symbolism at a brand identity level. Imbuing brands with meaning frames how your consumers understand you and is a big driver in affecting behaviour. Meaning denotes the role the brand will play. They are also playing to a similar audience, but the expectations of both Recess (step back) and Kin Euphorics (elevation) need something to back up meaning beyond their name. As brand owners and designers, we can control it. From name and pack to online experience and comms, meaning is active. Something we always champion with our clients is the importance of meaning. “Not tired, not wired.” But the identity lacks distinction to create continued memorability.īoth brands are striving to create a role for themselves in people’s lives as the expectations of what drinks and drinking means to new audiences continues to evolve. An antidote to modern times.” The brand messaging and the information on pack is clear to understand, so I know what to expect. Recess, another functional US beverage brand, is a CBD drink (or powder) geared towards anxious, aesthetic-obsessed millennials. The challenge is how do you manage experience expectations if your consumer is looking to emulate the sensations of their normal (booze-fuelled) night out? Customer acquisition should be incredibly easy with these bold claims and lively design, but retention may suffer if our understanding of what I’m signing up for isn’t clear. ‘Relax, the future of revelry is in our hands’ and ‘All Bliss, No Booze’ are lines helping to position Kin Euphorics as an exciting alcohol alternative. How do they work? What will I feel, if anything at all? Is this all bullshit? The sceptic in me struggles with their promise. But will it stand the test of time? Being a leader in a newly created category poses its own unique set of challenges. From a brand lens, they have established themselves as youthful (leveraging the Gen Z attitudinal shift away from booze), shown in its soft yet energetic colour palette, pack design, copy and content. Their alcohol-free drinks are chemically engineered to give you a variety of euphoric sensations, as well as an increase in conscious connection with others. At a glance, we know that wellbeing is the order of the day, and we know we should drink it, but we’re not too sure what’s in it or how it works.īella Hadid, supermodel and co-founder of non-alcohol adult drink brand Kin Euphorics, claims “Kin transforms the world’s oldest social ritual, drinking, into a thoughtful act of taking better care of ourselves”. A highly competitive space with many overlapping and interchangeable semiotic codes, ranging from the mystical to the scientific. It’s uncharted territory for the role of brand. These ingredients are employed with a focus on how they make you feel, intended to elevate your experience at traditional ‘alcohol occasions’. Nootropics, adaptogens and botanicals are some of the new RTBs you can expect to see take prominence in the alternative market. Not only are we seeing big brewers and distillers develop their zero-alcohol offering (a sector which grew 17% in the UK last year), but there’s also a new school of challengers looking to provide a buzz, minus the hangover and potential poor decision-making. The functional beverage space is flourishing. But before you reached for your reliable red, it could have been worth considering a non-alcoholic alternative. By the time this hit your inbox, this number would have increased by much more and you might have been tempted to throw in the towel yourself. In the UK, roughly 8 million of us take part in it every year, with more than half likely to give up by the second week. January was the perfect time to rethink how we consume, with ‘Dry January’ being the annual penance for an indulgent Christmas break. In the last two years, with the pandemic being a time to reflect, there’s been a lot of discussion around the effects of what we’re putting into our bodies. It is an app where you need to learn how to use it so teachers do need to become very familiar with the functions but the teaching guide is a great tool to support subject knowledge. With ScratchJr, young children (ages 5+) can learn to code - and code to learn Download 3.9 86 Votes CategoryEducation & Languages Program licenseFree Version1.3. Overall I think ScratchJr is a great app for KS1 and it is free! ScratchJr is child friendly, well presented and it can be used to teach key elements of the Computing curriculum. The children all enjoyed using this app and we will be returning again to this app later in the year so that the children can create more complex projects. This gave the children the opportunity to apply their learning and push themselves in the complexity of the programming. The collage consisted of a range of characters moving in different ways. The final project of the term was to make a spy collage using their skills they’d learnt. This is a great function as it allows projects to be based more on the topic being learnt in school. One skill they learnt was how to take photos and use these as their own characters. They learn how to move the cat forward and backward. It shows them how to create and save a new project. The first few lessons were very much based on learning the skills to move characters, add characters and change backgrounds. This is a short tutorial to help children get started with the ScratchJr app. We will be introducing this app into Year One later on in the year. This was their first experience of this app as ScratchJr. So far in school we have used this with Year Two to create a basic project based on their topic of spies. The plans are written for American schools but they are transferable and obviously teachers need to adapt the planning to fit their class’ needs. The first few lessons are about the skills then it goes on to explain how the skills go together to make more complex projects. Luckily the creators have also created a teaching program which goes alongside the app. There are some functions where children will need more direction such as linking character’s programs together by using the messaging function. The main interface is very child friendly and allows children to explore the range of basic movement functions which they connect like jigsaw pieces so it’s quite intuitive. Once children have mastered the basics they can then use their skills to create a presentation, story or game using a range of settings or characters.īefore children can make a project they need to learn what the majority of the functions do as there is a good range of functions, some of which children of this age may not have come across in other coding apps. ScratchJr is a coding program which allows children to create a range of projects using programming skills. It is a more basic version on the full version of Scratch and it is currently just on iPad, Android and it is also now web based. ScratchJr is a programming app aimed at the KS1 level but it could be used in lower KS2. It’s a shame that Philips hasn’t addressed that and made it possible to control lights across multiple Bridges without having to manually swap to the one that you want to control. Multiple Bridges can be added but they don’t talk to each other, so it’s like having separate systems. First, the Bridge only supports 50 devices in total, which sounds like a lot but it’s relatively easy to hit this limit: my kitchen alone has seven lights and two controls in it. While the Bridge seems expensive at £50, it can often be bought for less in a starter pack with some bulbs. Unless you’re only going to use one or two bulbs, the Bridge is an absolute must, and this review continues talking about the features that it provides. Thirdly, you can use the full selection of products, including Friends of Hue devices. Secondly, you get remote control of bulbs while you’re out, plus third-party integration with HomeKit, Alexa and so on. First, each bulb acts as an extender, so control is more reliable. This device enables Zigbee control (a low-power smart home communication protocol), which adds several features. For example, the Hue Wireless Dimmer can be paired with a few bulbs but you get more limited control.įor the full experience, in my opinion, a Hue Bridge is needed. To use Bluetooth, you have to be within range of the lights, and you’re more limited on the controls you can use. Bluetooth control is cheaper to get started with as you don’t need the Bridge, but more limited. The majority of the current range of Philips Hue devices are compatible with Bluetooth and Zigbee. A Bridge gives more features and is required for some devices.Bluetooth is cheaper to get started with.Whether you want to paint a room in light or dial up the brightness so that you can work more easily, Philips Hue has it all. Thanks to the wide range of physical controls, the best third-party integration and a brilliant app, getting the most out of the lights is easy. Yet, range is no good without control and it’s here that Hue excels. What makes Hue different to its competitors is the breadth of products available, from light bulb replacements to outdoor lights, standalone lamps, light strips and beyond. Philips Hue might have started life as ‘just’ colour-changing bulbs, but it’s evolved to be more than that. Controls Works with the Hue app, plus the full range of wireless controls.Plus, there are lots of wall, ceiling, lamps and outdoor lights. Light range Zigbee and Bluetooth bulbs are available in B22, E14, E27 and GU10 sizes. |
